Marcin Korolkiewicz is an artist and graphic designer, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts. He has worked professionally as a graphic designer for over 25 years, while developing his own painting practice alongside his career and increasingly treating it as his personal creative path. He is primarily interested in abstraction and in the possibility of building an image without depicting a specific object or place. He enjoys observing how simple elements, layers and repeated gestures can come together to form something that could not have been fully planned in advance. The material quality of painting is important to him — its texture, weight and traces, and the way they affect our perception of colour and form. In his work, he looks for a balance between order and chance, structure and intuition. His experience as a graphic designer influences the way he sees, but in painting he allows himself greater uncertainty and experimentation. The process of arriving at an image is as important to him as the final result. In his recent work, he has been developing the series Textus, in which layers, structures and relationships between the elements of the image play a central role. His starting point is the tradition of abstraction, particularly Polish abstraction, but he does not want simply to repeat it. He is more interested in exploring what can be done with this language today and what might still emerge from it. He sees painting as a way of looking closely at reality, including things that cannot easily be put into words.
